July 2016 I Having the Problem Again
Has Ford Fixed its Manual Problems?
Ford has long claimed that all its vehicles are 'Congenital Ford Tough.' Only just how tough are the transmissions? We review some of the transmission bug, recalls, and complaints that take plagued some of its vehicles.
An integral part of whatsoever vehicle's powertrain is the manual. It does not matter how much horsepower your engine makes. If your transmission can not reliably put that power to the ground, what you have is a paperweight.
Some auto manufacturers build transmissions that are considered nearly bulletproof, similar Porsche'due south PDK or Volkswagen's DSG, but unfortunately, Ford is not on that list.
Throughout the terminal 10 years or so, Ford has had issue after upshot with its transmissions in a variety of vehicles, leading to class action lawsuits and recalls on multiple continents. In this commodity, we will encompass everything you lot need to know about Ford transmission bug.
Ford's Powershift Debacle
The Ford DPS6 Powershift transmission has a notorious reputation for being unreliable. The unsuccessful attempt at a twin-clutch transmission is equipped on several vehicles, simply the well-nigh affected models are the Ford Focus and Fiesta.
Ford began producing the twin-clutch Powershift transmissions in 2010 to compete with the German variants from Volkswagen and BMW. The main benefits to this way of transmission over a traditional automated with a torque converter are better fuel economy and blistering shift speeds.
The compromise in this manual design is they exercise non operate as smoothly as a traditional automatic.
To put it but, this is considering a twin-clutch transmission is really ii manual transmissions joined together with a estimator controlling the clutches.
One function of the transmission controls half of the gears like first, 3rd, and 5th while the other half controls second, fourth, sixth, and contrary.
In nigh twin-clutch transmission designs, too known as "how the Germans do it," the clutch packs are submerged in hydraulic fluid. This has the issue of smoothing out the gear changes and extending the life of the clutch.
Ford, with its aplenty experience in edifice pickup trucks and passing off drunken horses as sports cars, decided to use dry out clutches.
This dry out clutch blueprint tends to exacerbate the inherent characteristics of twin-clutch transmissions, making the transmission slip off the line and shift roughly when it finally decides to alter gear.
On peak of the slipping and vibrations, the Ford Powershift as well has an event where the vehicle can just randomly pop into neutral while driving.
Surprisingly, the Detroit automaker has stated this is not a safe issue. Ford gets away with this claim considering safety features like ability steering and anti-lock brakes go along to role. These are only a few of the common issues with the DPS6 Powershift, but the story goes much deeper than that.
Has Ford Fixed its Powershift Transmission Problem?
You are probably thinking to yourself, if the Powershift transmission is and then bad Ford must accept stock-still it, correct? The best way to answer that is yes, just technically no.
Ford has released updated role numbers and fixes for the DPS6 Powershift that address minor bug. One of these fixes includes new seals to stop hydraulic fluid from dripping onto the clutches making the transmission slip.
However, they have not addressed the elephant in the room: the fact that they poorly designed the transmission in the kickoff place.
Class activeness lawsuits accept been filed in several countries, including the United states, Canada, and Australia equally early equally 2012. These lawsuits have gone on for years simply, in 2019, internal Ford documents were published by the Detroit Gratis Printing that showed Ford knew about the Powershift's blueprint problems before they even started edifice them.
Instead of going dorsum to the cartoon board, Ford decided to send the DPS6 anyway. To brand matters worse, the documents also testify that Ford basically told the dealers to pretend that everything was normal when they received complaints.
In 2020, a federal judge in the United States approved Ford'southward offering of $30 million to settle ane of the suits. Ford agreed to buy dorsum thousands of lacking Focus and Fiesta models built between 2011 and 2016 for as much equally $22,000 apiece.
All in all, the DPS6 Powershift transmission is a big stain on Ford'southward reputation. If you're in the market for a Ford, information technology is appropriate is to stay away from whatever vehicle with a Powershift. It is also of import to notation that, despite its shortcomings, Ford continued to produce some versions of the Powershift until 2019. So, proceed that in mind.
Ford ten-speed Automatic Issues
The 2d entry on our problematic gearbox radar is the Ford 10R80 10-speed automatic transmission. This gearbox is relatively new, striking the market in the 2017 Ford F-150 merely has gone on to grace the Ford Expedition and the legendary Mustang.
The x-speed 10R80 was created out of a partnership between Ford and its mortal enemy, General Motors.
At first glance, this cooperation between titans seems similar a proficient idea, only it turned out like the Empire and the Rebels joined forces to build the Death Star.
The mode the partnership was supposed to piece of work was that Ford would design and build a 10-speed longitudinal automatic transmission for use in rear-bicycle drive vehicles.
On the other side, GM would design and manufacture a ix-speed transverse automated manual for utilize in front-wheel-drive vehicles. Unfortunately, for all parties involved, it did not work out that way.
Soon after the 10R80 manual began hitting the streets, Ford started receiving complaints. Customers complained that the transmissions on their brand-new vehicles would change gear randomly and jerk aggressively.
Some customers went every bit far as to say that some of the shifts were so fierce that it could give the occupants whiplash.
Two lawsuits have been filed confronting Ford over problems with the 10R80 transmission. Both lawsuits allege that Ford knew that the issues with the x-speed could be a danger to consumers but chose to send them anyway.
One of these courtroom cases was dismissed in late 2020, citing the plaintiff did not properly allow Ford to try and fix the issues before bringing the complaint to court.
In essence, what the two Detroit powerhouses tried to exercise was reinvent the wheel. The goal was to create a manual that could shift fast similar a twin-clutch but be every bit smooth to drive equally a traditional automatic. What we got was a manual that feels great when it works properly but those morsels of satisfaction are few and far betwixt.
Has Ford's 10-Speed Transmission Problem Been Resolved?
Ford's 10-speed automatic transmission has been out for a few years now, and it has had Ford's phone ringing with complaints since day 1. So, the question remains: Has Ford fixed the 10-speed? The short answer is they are working on it.
The Motor City Mustang maker states that the majority of issues customers are experiencing are related to the x-speed transmission'south adaptive learning software.
In curt, what Ford is referring to is a process in which the transmission "learns" your driving habits to help better the economy and ride quality. A problem occurs if the system gets reset for any reason and has to larn your habits again, which causes rough shifting for a short fourth dimension.
Ford'southward showtime endeavor to remedy the problem with the 10R80 came in 2018 when they issued a technical service bulletin or TSB. A TSB is essentially an internal memo sent to dealerships from the manufacturer equally the official procedure for problems that are not in the manual yet.
This particular service bulletin states that if customers are experiencing rough operation of their 10-speed transmission to reprogram the control module. The update seems to remedy a lot of customer complaints merely some are notwithstanding non happy.
Ford has offered a number of other fixes for the 10-speed such as an updated clip for the shift cable and fifty-fifty replacement of the showtime planetary gear in some models. So, the expert news is information technology appears that Ford is finally taking the complaints seriously and actively trying to solve them.
Ford Transmissions and Their Overall Reliability
From the shaky starts of the twin-clutch Powershift to the random gear changes of the 10-speed automatic, it is pretty safe to say that Ford has had more than its fair share of manual problems. In the last ten years, the reputation of some of Ford's most beloved models has been tarnished past transmission issues.
To be fair, non all Ford's are going to have manual problems. Some models may become their unabridged lives without an issue, while others might be in the shop once a calendar month. After many years of complaints and a few lawsuits, Ford does seem to be taking the problems seriously and working to fix them.
Hopefully, they iron out the issues with the 10-speed because it shows existent promise in concept but simply fourth dimension will tell if they get it figured out. We practise not recommend you write Ford off as a whole, just be cautious on your search, and don't be surprised if the transmission has to go under the knife.

Ford has recalled the transmissions for a prune that locks the gearshift cable into the transmission. When this is not fully seated in place information technology tin event in the vehicle not going into gear properly but information technology does not seem to affect the power for the vehicle to shift once information technology is moving.
The x-speed transmission from Ford has had several reported bug since it was showtime introduced. Ford has attempted to correct some of the shifting problems past updating the software on the transmission control module, just owners notwithstanding report excessive dissonance and erratic shifting behavior.
At this point, information technology seems that Ford does non think that the problem is widespread plenty to issue a recall on every 10-speed transmission out there. I bought my new 2018 F150 XLT v.0 4WD in Feb, 2018. I traded in my 2010 F150 v.4 2WD with 120K miles of trouble free utilise. The 6 speed was amazingly good. The new ten speed has had downshift bug from the beginning. Ford has attempted 6 reflashes through three different dealerships. I bought a consummate 75K drivetrain extended warranty on day 1. What a waste! This is my 6th F150 over the final 30+years and my terminal. I can get 22MPG @ 75 MPH on the interstate but when I have to exit or reenter the evil trans has a mind of its own. This truck stickered for over $52K. I would gladly have back my 2010 and part of the $ divergence; but it is still a beautiful Leadfoot Greyness SPORT 4X 4D Extended Cab truck.

Had the truck in the shop a few times. Local dealer says there's no issue. Terminal time in I demanded that they reflash the trans. After they couldn't connect to information technology I knew there was a problem. Dearborn got involved. The trans/figurer was reflashed. The truck drives much ameliorate. UNTIL I tow my boat, information technology shimmy'southward and shakes. I end upwards shifting manually to make it drive similar it should. I but hope the new GMC 1500 doesn't have these issues…I'm done with the Ford 10 speed. My 2016 F150 vi speed was bullet proof. 2010 F150 was a powerhouse. (2 star rating id for the trans)

Focus & Explorer - Lemons with Steering Wheels
* 2013 Focus - replaced Powershift clutch twice, still hesitates and bucks when accelerating from end. Yes it has loftier mileage at present, but Ford refuses to repair it out of warranty. * 2017 Ford Explorer - transmission self-destructed at 20K miles. Replaced under warranty. Cocky-destructed again at 61,300 miles, Ford only covered 50% of price. (Price me $2500.) * I've been loyal Ford customer for 30+ years, but not anymore. Simply bought a 2022 Chevy Traverse Premier. Love it. If Ford won't stand up behind their products, why should I buy them?

Transmission is absolutely terrible. Shift points are inconsistent. Jumps from third to 5th gear 95% of the time causing my head to whip back under light to moderate throttle input.
